Feeling Comfortable with a Dentist
Choosing a health care provider is an important process. Comfort and ease are characteristics that play into the decision. People are vulnerable when in the care of another person that they do not know on a personal level. Patients need to trust their doctor or dentist. When dental services are needed, it is imperative that patients feel relaxed and safe.
Dentists often ask their patients to talk to them while dental tools are in the patient’s mouth. Questions such as “Does that hurt?” or “Are you comfortable?” are necessary for the dentist to ask because the dentist doesn’t want to patient to suffer. For the patient these questions may be awkward because of medication or the position of tools. That means the patient must feel extremely comfortable so that the questions are answered truthfully. The dentist does not want a lukewarm answer such as “I’m okay.” Or “I’ll be alright.”
In the event of a tooth extraction, these questions and answers are crucial to the success of the procedure. Tooth extraction requires medication to dull the pain. For certain patients it may require sedation. Comfort, trust, and honesty will make for a successful trip to the dentist.
